When students leave St. George’s classrooms, they’re able to apply the lessons learned to their everyday interactions with the people and world around them. SG901 prioritizes discussions of citizenship, leadership, culture and history that make this application possible.
In 2016, St. George’s partnered with Serve901 – a subsidiary of City Leadership that sponsors opportunities for people to connect with Memphis’ people, history and culture – to emphasize our commitment to service learning and community engagement. The Serve901 affiliation includes a four-year programming partnership through which Serve901 collaborates with our faculty and students to create outstanding learning experiences, from summer camps to “deep dive” leadership opportunities for middle and upper school students.
While the partnership is multi-faceted, the most visible aspect of the relationship is a renovated shared space in Midtown, Memphis. Nicknamed the “St. George’s/Serve901 Bunkhouse,” the facility includes bunks for more than 100 people and common areas for collaborative learning. The space serves as a meeting place where shared understanding grows as our city’s forward-thinkers facilitate essential conversations with our students and Serve901’s program participants.
SG901 programming is a manifestation of our desire to serve students by demonstrating what service to our city looks and feels like. We believe that the academic experience is enhanced when students are deeply and authentically engaged and feel empowered to make meaningful contributions now, rather than waiting until adulthood.
