Paint Memphis 2017
Posted 10/01/2017 01:00PM
Naturally, our student artists and musicians display their talents around school - in the band/art rooms, in the hallways, at our twice-a-year concerts. We even have a built-in art gallery in our fieldhouse lobby. And they certainly compete in annual art/music competitions with every other school in the region.

But, thanks to nimble teachers like Rose Doherty, Allison Webb, and Tom Link, who capitalized on their professional connections, our students moved outside their school walls, performing and creating art for a public purpose at the recent  Paint Memphis event. Alongside world-famous grafitti artists, Gryphon artists designed and painted an expanse of concrete wall in order to beautify a neighborhood, while our Modern Music Ensemble provided an amazing acoustical celebration for all participants.

The result? Our artists were just a handful of high schoolers in the city allowed to participate in and create lasting public art. Their contribution will last years and years, literally changing their city. Says Band Director Tom Link, "A chance to participate in a community building and changing event of some magnitude gives students an instrument of reflection on their part, so we can see how we all can take part in actions that can have amazing impact."

Well done, Gryphon Artists!
