To the St. George’s community:
On behalf of the St. George’s Independent School trustees, I’m honored to announce that Timothy Gibson has been selected unanimously and enthusiastically to be our new head of school, effective immediately. His body of work, stellar character, and commitment to St. George’s mission and vision confirmed that he was the best candidate for this job.
Known to a generation of SGIS families for his leadership of our college guidance program since 2009, Timothy has grown to be a beloved figure in the eyes of our community. As assistant head of school for educational access, Timothy has sought to build cohesion across our three campuses and supervised student affairs while always championing academic excellence.
A year ago, when the trustees were seeking an interim head of school, many faculty and staff members approached us to ask for Timothy to lead until we found our new head. After watching Timothy’s effectiveness in the interim role, the search committee made the decision to add Timothy to the national pool of candidates.
Guided by our consultants from Resource Group 175 in our year-long process, our hardworking search committee reviewed materials from 25 diverse and experienced candidates. We then invited seven individuals to meet with the committee in August, and after a thorough interview process invited two finalists to our campus for all-encompassing interviews with the entire St. George’s community. We are grateful to parents, students, faculty and staff members, and alumni for contributing earnest feedback through this process.
This community response helped illuminate just how strongly our stakeholders value Timothy’s distinctive gifts, experience, and capabilities. He is credited with leading our school through the challenges of 2020 with not only strategic foresight, but the comfort that only a true leader can provide. His words have quelled fears and his decisive action spurred our academic team to develop a hybrid learning model unlike any in our area – allowing families to learn and grow in a way that is comfortable and accessible to them. Through this seamless planning and pivot, Timothy and his team have strengthened our community in the pandemic while staying true to the heart of our mission.
When it comes to fundraising, we have seen how effectively Timothy embodies St. George’s to the people he meets. This authentic approach has already made a positive impact. As trustees, we have committed anew to supporting and amplifying Timothy’s leadership in the key areas of enrollment management and advancement for St. George’s.
Timothy brings 25 years of educational experience to this headship. Prior to joining St. George’s in 2009, he served eight years in admissions at Rhodes College here in Memphis, and five years in student affairs at Lawrence University in Wisconsin. He earned a Master of Education from Christian Brothers University and a Bachelor of University Studies at Eastern New Mexico University.
I hope you will reach out to welcome Timothy into his new role. And let us all look forward to gathering someday soon in a community celebration of this important milestone!
