A Schedule That Promotes Deep Engagement

As a result of extensive research and input from faculty, staff, parents, and students, St. George’s recently announced the adoption of a new schedule. Beginning in the 2016-17 year, all campuses moved from trimesters to semesters. At the Collierville campus the start time shifted from 8:00 am to 8:30 am, and class time lengthened from 45 minutes to 70 minutes. To capitalize on the optimum learning times for young children, the lower school start times remained at 8:00 am.

The revised middle/upper school schedule is based on extensive research indicating that better rested adolescents are more successful in the classroom. Further, class periods of 70 minutes and deeper homework preparation for fewer classes per day affords our learners far more thoughtful and engaged interaction with their studies. Classes of 70 minutes allow, for example, longer and more varied discussions in English, more complex lab experiments, collaborative small group exercises in world languages and history, and even greater opportunities to explore the Collierville campus’ 250+ acres of woods and wetlands. Last, moving to semesters means the elimination of several days of exams and exam preparation and thus the gain of multiple days of engaged learning time for students in grades 6-12.

For your convenience, some frequently asked questions related to the middle/upper school schedule, as well as a daily schedule, are provided below:

What are the details about shuttle transportation?

As is our current practice, two shuttles will provide transportation to and from the Collierville campus, one departing from the Memphis campus and another departing from Oak Court Mall. While final shuttle route confirmations are pending, it is likely that each shuttle will depart between 7:15 and 7:30 am to mitigate local traffic patterns and so that students riding the shuttles can take advantage of the later start time of 8:30 am. Additionally, middle/upper school students dropped off at the Germantown campus by 8:00 am can take the shuttle to the Collierville campus and be there in plenty of time for our 8:30 am start of school. Shuttles will continue to depart the Collierville campus at 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday. The shuttle fee is $300 per year, and online registration is available at www.sgis.org. Registration for this service will begin this spring, and spaces will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
